More than one million people in America are living with HIV, and approximately one in five do not know it. Almost a full forty percent of people infected with HIV are not diagnosed until they have developed AIDS, sometimes up to ten years after they became infected with HIV.

This year marks the 18th annual National HIV Testing Day. It  is coordinated by the National Association of People with AIDS, with support from AIDS.gov and the Center for Disease Control.

HIV testing and diagnosis is critical as a first step in linking people with HIV to health care that offers life-saving treatments, as well as support services that help individuals maintain a healthy lifestyle while practicing safer behaviors.

Today, thousands of organizations nationwide are hosting events offering free HIV testing. Visit HIVtest.org to find an event in your community.” Take the test, take control.”
