Join me Sunday as we kick off the New Year with a Polar Plunge! We can all agree there may have been difficult times in 2011, but we have much to be thankful for. Volunteers and people in our field make a difference in peoples' lives everyday and jumping into the freezing cold waters is nothing in comparison to the dedication, commitment and strength of those who care enough to help others on a daily basis. Friday, October 14th was the last day at work for one of our nurses, Lynn Ostapow. Lynn is moving out of state and will be missed greatly.
Those of you who had Lynn as your registered nurse know her as a compassionate, caring person who is devoted to the welfare of her clients and caregivers. We at Beacon AFC know her as a loyal, professional and hard-working employee who gave our company her best for over a year, and as a very dear friend.
We wish Lynn the greatest success as she starts this new stage of her life, and although we are saddened by her departure, she is
8th Annual Womens’ HIV Health Conference in Acushnet
The 8th Annual Womens' HIV Health Conference, "This Could Never Happen to Me; Sex in Our City" will be held at Century House in Acushnet, on Thursday, October 20th, 2011 from 8:30 am- 3:00 pm. The event will feature keynote speaker Dr. Martha Sanchez, an HIV/Hepatitis C specialist from the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center, as well as a panel of women speakers who will educate women on HIV and other health issues. Also featured is motivational speaker and comedienne Maria Falzone, who will present her lecture, Sex Rules!

On Monday, October 17th, the South Coast Senior Resource Association is sponsoring a seminar on Alzheimers/Dementia Issues and Behavioral Management, to be hosted at Atria Senior Living in Fairhaven, MA. The featured speaker is Dr. Peter Ham, LMHC; MA. Dr. Ham is a professional Alzheimers consultant and is Director of the Professional Counseling Center in New Bedford.
The takes place from 5-6:30 pm, with registration starting at 4:30 pm. Refreshments will be served and raffle prizes will be donated by all the SRA members. We hope you will join us for a fun and informative evening!

The New Bedford Rehabilitiation Hospital is holding their 7th Annual Health Expo this Thursday, September 22nd from 12pm-4pm. This event if free and open to all. The NBRH staff and other licensed medical professionals will be conducting complimentary health screenings, filling out health care proxy forms and much more. There will be raffle prizes and complimentary refreshments and a live broadcast by Fun 107 (WFHN). Many local vendors and health care providers will be in attendance as well! Beacon Adult Foster Care is joining the fight against Alzheimer's Disease by participating in the Southeastern Massachusetts Walk to End Alzheimer's! This event takes place at Bristol Community College in Fall River, Sunday October 2nd, 2011. Full details of the event can be found here.
